Why homeowners choose Marble

Classic beauty that earns its patina.

Marble is the surface designers reach for when a room needs a focal point — most often white with contrasting grey veining, in kitchens, baths, fireplace surrounds and tabletops. It stays naturally cool, which is why pastry cooks have favored it for centuries.

It is also a soft, porous stone, and we would rather tell you that up front. Acidic foods react with the calcium carbonate in marble and leave dull etch marks, sealing slows staining but does not stop it, and it scratches more readily than granite or quartz. Homeowners who love marble learn to see those marks as patina. If you want a surface that looks identical in year five, quartzite or a marble-look porcelain will make you happier.

Good to know

Frequent Marble Questions:

Straight answers about sealing, durability, grades and cost.

Both can happen, and they are different problems. Staining is absorption — oil or pigmented liquid soaking in — and sealing slows it down. Etching is a chemical reaction: acids like lemon juice, vinegar and wine dull the polish where they sit, and sealer does not prevent it. Wiping spills promptly is the single most effective habit.

Wipe spills quickly, especially anything acidic or pigmented. Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner rather than vinegar or bleach. Reseal periodically — if water droplets darken the stone within a few minutes, it is time. Polished finishes can be re-polished occasionally to restore shine.

Honed for a working kitchen. Its matte surface hides etching and small scratches far better, because there is no high polish to interrupt. Polished marble is more reflective and dramatic, and better suited to bathrooms, fireplace surrounds and low-traffic surfaces.

Not bad — but it does require more care than other types of surfaces. If you cook constantly and want a surface that looks brand new for years, marble will frustrate you. If you are drawn to the patina of a well-used European kitchen, marble ages into exactly that.

Yes. Light etching can often be polished out, and deeper marks can be professionally honed and refinished to restore an even surface. It is one advantage natural stone holds over engineered surfaces, where damage is usually permanent.
