Natural stone · virtually maintenance-free

Soapstone Countertops.

Deep greys and near-blacks with blue and green undertones, a soft honed finish, and a stone so dense that hot pans, red wine and lemon juice simply do not matter.

Why homeowners choose soapstone

Non-porous, heat-proof, beautifully imperfect.

Soapstone is naturally non-porous, so it never needs sealing and nothing stains it. Acids that would etch marble do nothing here. You can set a pan straight off the burner onto it — soapstone was used for woodstoves and laboratory counters long before it reached kitchens, and for the same reasons.

The trade-off is softness: its talc content means it scratches and dents more readily than granite. Most owners consider that the point. Scratches buff out with fine sandpaper, and a wipe of mineral oil or wax darkens the stone and evens the patina. It works equally well in a period farmhouse, a modern kitchen, a laundry room, a fireplace surround or an outdoor kitchen, where it resists both weather and bacteria.

Built to last

Why soapstone holds up.

Never needs sealing

Naturally non-porous — no sealer at installation, none later, ever.

Truly heat-proof

Set hot cookware directly on the surface without worry.

Acid & stain proof

Wine, lemon and vinegar do nothing to it — no etching, no staining.

Ages into a patina

Mineral oil or wax deepens the color and evens the character over time.

Scratches buff out

Softer than granite, but marks sand away instead of needing a pro.

Great outdoors

Resists weather and bacteria, making it a natural for outdoor kitchens.

Good to know

Frequent Soapstone Questions:

Straight answers about sealing, durability, grades and cost.

No — oiling is cosmetic, not protective. The stone is already non-porous. Mineral oil or wax simply darkens it and evens out the patina, so the whole surface deepens at the same rate rather than developing dark patches where you cook most. Skip it and the stone still lightens and darkens naturally over the years.

More easily than granite or quartzite, yes. The upside is that repair is a homeowner job: fine sandpaper and a little mineral oil make most scratches disappear. Deeper dings soften into the patina.

Never. It is naturally non-porous, which is why wine, oil and lemon juice cannot stain or etch it. This is the lowest-maintenance natural stone we install.

Greys through near-blacks, typically with blue or green undertones and white or pale veining. It arrives lighter than most people expect and darkens with use and oiling. We recommend looking at both oiled and un-oiled samples before you choose.

Yes, and it is one of the better choices for it. Soapstone stands up to weather and resists bacteria, so it works well for outdoor kitchens, grill surrounds and covered patios in our climate.
